Gates

Gates was once a settlement for miners and loggers who occupied the town, especially in the winter. The post office for the area was established in February 1882, with Jane Henness as the first postmaster. The post office was temporarily named Henness, but this name was changed to Rock Creek on August 23, 1883. In 1892, W. R. Robertson, then postmaster, moved the post office across the river to a place called Gatesville. Gates became the final name of the post office, as well as the name of the city when it was incorporated in 1950.

Our governing body is a mayor and five councilors. The mayor position is two years and the councilors are four-year terms. We have a public water system which we are now upgrading to a state of the art membrane filter system. Our general income status is low to moderate and the city's population is 505.

We boast a beautiful gazebo which was built and paid for by volunteers and the Ford Family Foundation through the efforts of the Ford Institute for Community Building.

We have three restaurants to appeal to all appetites: The Frontier Country Restaurant & Lounge for steak eaters, Sierra Mexican Restaurant for fantastic Mexican food and the Canyon Grill for burgers and salads prepared fresh daily!

We also have one motel, a local grocery store, a gun shop, a beauty parlor and a local post office. Come enjoy our small city park with picnic tables and swings nestled in a quiet neighborhood area. Our city office is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with helpful and friendly staff.
