Mill City

Mill City - www.ci.mill-city.or.us/

In 1886, four entrepreneurs from Stayton gave Mill City its name when they purchased land from Sarah Elizabeth Hensley next to a falls on the North Santiam River. The men had machinery hauled up from Stayton on wagons, for a mill, which they named "The Santiam Lumbering Company." Mill City was platted by Richard Rice, who was married to Hensley at the time. Soon thereafter, Mill City's post office was established in May 1888. The city of Mill City was incorporated in 1947.

Mill City has the largest population of all the North Santiam Canyon communities and is considered the hub for many services and activities. The city straddles both sides of the North Santiam River, and is therefore located partially in Marion County and partially in Linn County.

The North Santiam River runs directly through the center of Mill City and is well known for its fine fishing and whitewater rafting. Just northwest of the bridge that crosses the river is a very popular launching point for many whitewater kayakers. Mill City is also the home of one of the more spectacular fireworks displays created by the Mill City Fire Department every Fourth of July.

Mill City has a fire hall, a city hall and uses city water. The city has three parks within the city limits: Kimmel Park, Hammond Park and Memorial Wayside Park. Stores, restaurants, a post office, a pharmacy, a museum, a senior center, a library, antique shops and supply stores occupy the city. Mill City boasts two local newspapers: Independent Press and the Santiam News. In addition, Mill City Middle School, Santiam High School and the Santiam Canyon District Office ( www.santiam.k12.or.us ) reside in the city limits. The presence of this educational system in Mill City is paramount to the city's success.
