Weather conditions in the Cascades can change dramatically and quickly. A sunny day in the valley does NOT mean a sunny day in the mountains. Please visit remote areas with caution and be prepared for winter conditions.
Big Springs Sno Park and Maxwell Sno Park
Primarily for non-motorized use, although they are part of a larger motorized trail system. Mostly Easy and Moderate trials for cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Located on Hwy 22, just under 30 miles past Detroit, OR and a few miles from the Hwy 22 and Hwy 20 junction. Sno Park Permits are required. See below for permit information.

McCoy Snowmobile Area
Locally built and maintained trail and snow shelter, primarily for snowmobile use. Located just 3.5 miles east of Detroit (near Idanha), it's the ongoing project of the North Santiam Snowmobile Club, who's members (mostly residents of the nearby Detroit and Idanha area, in partnership with the USFS) have worked hard to build trails and keep them clear. The club was started in 1973 and each year, they maintain nearly 60 miles of trails with their own equipment. Residents often spend several weeks each summer devoted to this area. Please respect the history and effort of this area and its members when visiting. That said, the North Santiam Snowmobile Club wishes that you come stay locally and have fun!
Sno-Park Permits are NOT required because the North Santiam Snowmobile Club plows the parking lot. Thank you, volunteers!

Directions:
From Salem/Detroit: Take Hwy 22 East to Idanha (3 miles past Detroit). Look for a building with "Harold Hills Logging" on the left, then turn left on McCoy Creek Road.
From Sisters/Bend: Take Hwy 20 past Hoodoo. Keep right at the Hwy 22/20 junction. You are now on Hwy 22. Go approx. 25 miles and turn right on McCoy Creek Road. If you see a building with "Harold Hills Logging" on the right, or enter the town of Idanha, you've gone too far.
How can I help support the North Santiam Snowmobile Club?
- Become a member - just $10! Visit the North Santiam Snowmobile Club's website to learn how to become a member. Dues are just $10 annually (add $25 for Oregon State Snowmobile Association dues - required). Membership comes with a 120 member social club that meets for potlucks every third Saturday of the month.
- Donations are always welcome! We use the funds to keep grooming equipment maintained and fueled, purchase trail markers and upgrade the parking lots. Please make checks payable to North Santiam Snowmobile Club and mail to PO Box 492 Detroit, OR 97342.
- Join us for work parties! Plan to spend a day during the summer on one of these needed tasks: mechanical, fire wood for the shelter, grooming, trail clean-up or general maintenance. Just check the appropriate box on the Membership Form.
- Shop the local communities! Many local business owners are also members of this club. You can help by stopping to eat or buying your supplies anywhere in the North Santiam Canyon area. Call the North Santiam Chamber of Commerce for restaurant, lodging and supply recommendations: 503-897-5000 (please leave a message as we are volunteer staffed.)
Sno Park Permits
Sno Park permits are used to pay for plowing area parking lots by ODOT. Permits are generally not available at the park itself and most developed parks require them. Parks are patrolled by state police and you will be fined $30 for not having one. Detroit Sno Park retailers are: Mountain High Grocery 503-854-3696 and River's Run Market 503-854-3039. Mill City permit retailers: Santiam Sports Center 503-897-2881.
